Genre: Indie Folk Thoughts: This is a brief album of pleasant, female-lead folky songs. Adam Copies is an explosive song that immediately stood out. I didn't spend much time with this record, but I enjoyed each listen-through. Genre: Art Pop Thoughts: Colorful and sharp with enjoyable electronic production. Albums are organized alphabetically by artist name, since assigning a numerical ranking to this group would be wildly arbitrary. I decided to cap myself at 100 releases, so there are plenty of other albums from this year that I would throw into this mix. The bottom chunk of my top 100 features projects that I enjoyed, but for any number of reasons (how much I enjoyed them, how much time I invested in them, project length, etc.) I did not feel comfortable ranking higher than 60ish.

Individual songs are great, but this list is about albums. The playlist consists mostly of the "Highlights" from the albums I discuss below, along with cuts from other albums I liked not on this list, and random one-off singles that weren't on any official release. For the sake of variety, each artist is limited to no more than two songs. If you prefer, here is a link to the playlist itself. Some shortcuts: click here to skip to the top 60 albums, click here to skip to the top 30 albums, and click here to skip to the top 10 albums.įor those thinking I don't care about albums, I want to know about individual tracks from 2017, here is a Spotify playlist with some of my favorite songs from the year: Most importantly, this is all my own personal opinion! Genre-labeling is mostly my gut-reaction description of an album's sound, oftentimes with help from Google if I can't decide on a categorization. I've more or less ranked albums based on my personal preference, which is an arbitrary and demeaning (but fun) exercise, and given my thoughts on each. So in an attempt to elevate my music-listening hobby and wage war on the staggering amount of musical content being output by the world, I decided to catalogue my favorite releases from this year.Ĭonsequently, and primarily to feign productivity while home for the holidays, this list came to life. It makes listening to music an incredibly enjoyable and accessible hobby, if not overwhelming. There are so many artists releasing new albums in any number of genres on any given week, and streaming services make it all available at the touch of a mousepad.

This year was a great one for music, but every year is a great year for music.

Fortunately, 2017 delivered on that end as well. That's nice, but above all I listen to music because it's fun. Many music blogs and publications begin their end-of-year lists with a (usually negative) comment on the political and cultural climate of the world how the year's music was both a solace from and manifestation of this condition, thereby making 2017 a special year for music.
